Not only does Oak Brook boasts one of the lowest real estate tax rates in the Chicago Metropolitan area, but Oak Brook has one of the lowest tax rates in all of Illinois. In part, this is due to the small population (8,000) and large contribution of sales tax revenue (primarily from the ultra-chic regional shopping mall, Oak Brook Center).
Oak Brook homes are arranged by subdivision, some of which are gated. Privacy is excellent as the minimum lot size is one-half acre. There are no sidewalks. The custom built homes are executive level. Like the neighboring town of Hinsdale, a trend toward demolishing old homes to make way for new ones has begun in Oak Brook. Typically, this occurs in the central core Oak Brook subdivisions where the trees are mature and the school districts are decidedly Oak Brook elementary schools and Hinsdale Central High School.
